Algarve is a historic province, 1,958 sq miles in size, located in the south of Portugal. The capital is Faro; other important cities are Silves, Portimão, and Lagos. A lot of fruit is grown in the Algarve, (almonds, citrus, grapes, olives, figs, pomegranates.) There is also mining, offshore fishing, and cork processing. The region is the most popular tourist resort of Portugal, creating an opportunity for home owners to rent their villas, apartments, guest houses

The Algarve is hilly, but with lots of valleys. Its highest point is the mountain range of Monchique, with the highest point being the peak of the Foia standing at 906m. It has approximately 410,000 permanent inhabitants, with a density of 76 people per square kilometer). This figure increases to over a million people at the height of summer due to tourists regularly visiting every year. The Algarve has several cities, towns and villages. It also includes some islands. The region is also the home of the Ria Formosa Lagoon, a nature reserve of over 170 square kilometers and a stopping place for hundreds of different birds.

The region's capital is the city of Faro. Other cities are Albufeira, Lagoa, Lagos, Loule, Olhao, Portimao, Quarteira, Silves, Tavira, and Vila real de santo antonio.

The length of the south-facing coastline is approximately 155 kilometers. Beyond the westernmost point of Cape St. Vincent it stretches a further 50 kilometers to the north. The coastline is notable for picturesque limestone caves and grottoes, particularly around Lagos, which are accessible by powerboat. There are many other beautiful and famous summer places such as Albufeira, Vilamoura, Praia da rocha, Lagos, Armacao de pera, Alvor, Monte Gordo, Tavira and Sagres.

During the 1960s the Algarve became a very popular holiday destination, mainly from Britain. It has since become a common destination for Germans, Dutch, and Irish People. Many of these tourists own their own property in the region. There are Algarve-based English-written publications and newspapers specifically addressed to these people. In addition to the natural beauties and plenty of beaches, the Algarve has invested in the creation of a network of golf courses with hotels and villas alongside. Well-known beaches in the Algarve range from Praia da marinha to armacao de pera. A well known spa town is Caldas de monchique.

The Algarve is a popular Travel Destination, primarily because of its lovely beaches, a climate that rivals the Mediterranean, and its relatively low costs.

Located in the small towns and villages surrounding the Algarve coast. Over the past 50 years the Algarve has seen an increase in development, particularly from non-Portuguese developers. Algarve's mild climate has attracted interest from Northern Europeans wishing to have a holiday home for rental purposes. Being a region of Portugal, and therefore in the European Union, any European citizen has the right to freely buy property and reside with little formality in the Algarve. British expatriates, followed by German, Dutch and Scandinavians, are among the largest groups wishing to own a home in this sunny region of Portugal.

The Algarve has many sports clubs, including football teams which play in the second and third leagues of the national football championship. Examples include the football teams of Portimonense, Olhanense, and Louletano. SC Farense is the most successful football club in the Algarve, however, after having trouble financially. They are now playing in the 4th level of Portuguese football. The Clube de Ciclismo de Tavira is a noted Portuguese cycling team. The major sporting stadium in the Algarve is the Estadio Algarve, where SC Farense and Louletano play their home matches. The region is also host to the annual Algarve Cup, an invitational tournament for national teams in womens football.
